3 Reasons Community Involvement Matters

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

Nowadays, community is a buzzword that really gets people’s attention. That’s because it matters. People crave a sense of belonging. The chance to be a part of something greater. And to say they made a positive impact on something or someone. For small businesses, community involvement can make a big difference in their surroundings and in their brand’s success.

It doesn’t matter if you're selling strictly direct to consumers or if you operate out of a traditional brick-and-mortar store, becoming an active part of your community is a solid way to boost the visibility of your business while adding some much needed good into the world. Beyond a brand logo or tagline is an image. You want to ensure people view and think about your brand in a positive light. Being active within the community is one of the most effective ways to make that happen.

Still not sold on the whole community involvement thing? Here are 3 reasons to show we know what we’re talking about.

1. More Kindness = More Brand Awareness

When you step out into the community, it does more than give you a reason to pat yourself on the back. It puts a face to the name of your business. You are an extension of your brand, so make yourself visible, approachable and of course, likable. As they said in the theme song of Cheers, “you want to be where everybody knows your name.”

So do the work. Get out there and make sure everybody knows your company’s name (and learn the names of individuals you interact with as well). Finding ways to spread kindness within your community will act as an open invitation for turning customers into loyal brand ambassadors.

2. Paying It Forward Fuels Growth

Dedicating your time, effort and resources on a local level will prove to be a wise investment. People are more likely to buy from brands they know and trust. Companies that are absent from the community landscape may feel colder or impersonal, giving you a leg up on the competition. While other business owners are stuck in tunnel vision, focused on what’s going on internally, you’ll be busy making a bigger picture impact.

From enhanced community development to supporting meaningful causes to helping deserving individuals, you’ll be fostering meaningful connections. These relationships will serve as a stepping stone to help your business reach higher levels of success. After all, who you know matters.

Developing ties with customers and other business owners presents opportunities for impactful collaboration and increased growth among all parties involved.

3. Positive Employees Are A Result Of Positive Actions

Community involvement has internal advantages too! Demonstrating social responsibility in a company is a key driver of employee engagement, productivity and retention. Studies have shown that businesses with a community engagement component tend to have happier employees who more strongly identify with their workplace.

Employees who are passionate about what they do and what the brand represents are more likely to attract other quality employees. Additionally, giving back as a company helps unify coworkers. According to UnitedHealth Group, 64 percent of surveyed employees bonded and built stronger connections while volunteering together.
